6 Questions with Joy McCarthy

As a holistic nutritionist and the creator of the popular website Joyous Health, Joy McCarthy knows a thing or two about inspiring us to find our own path to joyous health. We sat down with Joy to learn her meal prep tips and find out what her favourite recipe to make is.

Do you have any meal prep tips?

Yes, I’m all about grocery lists! I keep a little post-it note pad in my kitchen. Whenever I run out of something, I write it down so I don’t forget it for my next grocery shop. I shop according to the next 3-4 main meals I’m going to eat. Since I love cooking and shopping, I go to the health food store a few times per week. But if you want to be more organized than that, you could grocery shop for 7 days worth of main meals. Keep in mind you may have leftovers that could work for a whole meal.

What’s your favourite Sunday routine?

My favourite Sunday routine is making a big breakfast for my family, or if we are feeling lazy we love going to the Drake Commissary for brunch! Vienna and I love their green smoothie and we always share it! We always make time for a long walk at some point throughout the day to get in our 10,000 steps and it’s also a day of getting organized, cleaning and doing some food prep for the week. I don’t like to have any plans on Sunday — I always prefer it just to be a day for us as a family.

Do you have a favourite recipe you love to make and why?

Pancakes for sure. We are a family of pancake monsters and my Blueberry Buckwheat Pancakes from Joyous Detox are a favourite. I always make a large batch so we have leftovers and I can pop in the toaster the next day or give to Vienna as an afternoon snack when she’s up from her nap. There is always a schlop of coconut butter and real Canadian maple syrup on top of my pancakes. Sometimes I mix in fermented vegan proteins+ to give them a little protein boost!

What’s your favourite Genuine Health product and why?

Definitely advanced gut health probiotics. My husband Walker and I take them every day to maintain good gut health and keep our immune system strong. Especially important when our daughter who is in daycare, is bringing home every known germ on planet earth!

How do you find time for yourself with such a busy schedule?

It’s tough some days. But I LIVE by my google calendar and schedule everything in, even my social life, grocery shopping— EVERYTHING!  Some days, time to myself is peeing with the washroom door closed and other days it’s a 20 minute yogaglo.com session before my daughter wakes up.

What fruit or vegetable is your spirit animal?

If I was a food, I would be definitely be turmeric! Spicy, sweet, versatile, bright, leaves you with a mark you’ll never forget!! 😉
