During the cold winter months we tend to hibernate and fill up on soothing comfort foods. Craving more rich and decadent food is natural, as your body adapts to colder weather it seeks to cultivate protective layer or blanket of warmth around your body.

However, all of the excess sugar, unhealthy fats, and perhaps a few too many glasses of wine can lead to a sluggish liver and leave your body in an overburdened and fatigued state.

With the skin being our largest, and most visible, detox organ, symptoms of distress is a clear sign that your body needs more supportive nutrients and botanicals to get back on track. Whatever toxins are not eliminated through the intestines and digestive tract will come out through the skin.

The liver governs a lot of hormone filtration, but also the making of hormones. If the liver function is impaired by toxic overload, we are more susceptible to hormonal imbalance and in turn, suffer from skin conditions such as acne.

The truth is, it can be painfully embarrassing to walk around with acne or eczema, but there are many natural ways to improve your skin appearance immediately. Flooding your body with detoxifying and beautifying foods will give you a natural healthy glow, more elasticity (less wrinkles), reduce inflammation (Rosacea) and clear up clogged, acne prone skin.

Here are 5 simple things you can incorporate into your daily routine to enjoy clear glowing skin from within:

Greens every day ~ We already know greens are nutritional powerhouses! Chlorophyll, which gives greens its colourful pigment, has long been thought of as a blood purifier and recent studies have documented its effectiveness at helping to clear persistent chemical pollutants from the body. The benefits of the high chlorophyll content also include reduction of inflammation, and reducing fatigue caused by viruses, candida and fungi. An easy way to get your daily dose of of chlorophyll, and other valuable plant-based nutrients is with a serving of greens+, a research-proven formula that is packed with unique, nourishing phytonuturtients (plant-based nutrients).

Add some algae ~ Chlorella, spirulina and other algae, help to convert toxic waste material into harmless substances, provide free radical protection, and an array of vitamins, minerals and enzymes that help to support healthy digestion and skin. Both spirulina and cholorella are superstar ingredients also found in the greens+ formula.

Support the liver ~ aside from the above mentioned greens and algae, certain nutrients and botanical extracts help to boost phase I and ll of liver detox pathways. Healthy liver equals healthy skin! Broccoli sprouts help the liver remove excess estrogen and xeno-estrogens, acerola berries, which are high in vitamin C, offer anti-oxidant support to reduce free radical damage from detoxification, and milk thistle seed extract provides antioxidant support to protect liver from toxins, assists in liver cell regeneration and is especially helpful after excess alcohol or fat consumption. Look for standardized extracts from these ingredients in your green food supplement to ensure that you are getting results.

Hydrate ~ The human body is composed of 60% water, with the skin at 64-70%. We need water for every single process in our body, especially to help the body remove toxins, as well as keeping all the cells hydrated and plump! The amount of water you should drink varies on how much you exercise, your age, how much fresh water rich fruits and vegetables you consume, the amount of caffeine and alcohol you drink, and how much of your diet is composed of rich and fatty foods (which further deplete your water reserves). For a simple calculation ~ divide your body weight (in pounds) in half. You should drink that number of ounces each day. Omega 3 fatty acids are also of great importance in maintaining healthy hydration, as well as providing anti-inflammatory and structural support to the skin – not to mention myriad health benefits throughout the body. These are essential, meaning they need to come from the diet, and clean, potent fish oils like omega3 extra strength ensure that you get what your body needs every day.

Daily bowel movements ~ Are you having 1-2 daily bowel movements? If not, you are probably experiencing some uncomfortable straining and what’s worse, reabsorbing toxins from your large colon! To help normalize bowel movements ensure you are maintaining a healthy gut flora balance by feeding the beneficial bacteria with fermented foods and getting adequate amounts of both soluble and insoluble fibre from fruits, vegetables and seeds like flax and chia. Aim for at least 35-40 grams daily.
