My Joyous Self-Care Routine

My self-care routine has definitely evolved over the years. When I was in my 20’s it was all about fitness and facials. I went to the gym at least four times per week with the intention to sweat, like really sweat! On non-gym days I would get up at 5:30am in the morning (no matter the weather) and go for a run outdoors. Once a month I would treat myself to a facial, dreamy right? In my early 30’s, self-care was a yoga class in a studio (never at home) or seeking out the new and trendy fitness fads and taking my natural health supplements. In my late 30’s when my daughter was born, just washing my hair and drying it, felt like self-care. I found it really tough to make time for an in-person yoga class and resorted to doing it at home using a yoga app which to be honest, is just as rejuvenating!

Before having my own business and having a child, it seemed that self-care was just something that came naturally, it was always part of my life because I felt like I always had “me-time” so I didn’t have to schedule it in. Now that I’m 40, with a toddler and a thriving business, my self-care routine has never been more important to my happiness and well… my sanity!

These are five things I do for self-care.

  1. I take my natural health supplements, religiously. Right now, my go-to’s are Genuine Health’s fermented organic gut superfoods+ and advanced gut health probiotic women’s DAILY – both for gut health. I add gut superfoods to my smoothies every day that I share with my husband Walker and my daughter Vienna, and I take the probiotics as a capsule every morning. It keeps me regular and I know that by supporting my gut health, I’m supporting my whole health by nourishing my microbiome. I travel with my supplements too J
  1. I walk. A lot. In fact, there is rarely a day that goes by that I don’t get in at least 10,000 steps. On days I don’t walk enough I definitely feel more sluggish and stagnant in my body. Most of the walking I do is outside and when it’s cold I find it especially invigorating. Walking in nature has many benefits that include boosting mood-enhancing neurotransmitters like serotonin while reducing stress hormones and exposing me to good bacteria that are abundant in greenspaces across Toronto where I live.
  2. I drink my nutrition in the morning. Back to point number 1, I make a daily morning smoothie that includes fruit, vegetables, good fat and protein. One of my favourite smoothies to make it this Coconut Crunch Smoothie Bowl and even though Christmas is over, I’m still making this Gingerbread Smoothie because it’s perfect for these cold temperatures as the ingredients are warming and comforting. Rarely a day goes by that I don’t have a smoothie, even while traveling I seek out somewhere to have a smoothie or I make one where I’m staying.
  1. Being home. Even though I do a lot of travel and I enjoy seeing many new places and discovering new food, my favourite place to be is at home with my favourite people and my favourite things (everything in my kitchen!). Being home is the perfect place for me to relax and recharge. I love the energy, light and feeling of my home, it’s definitely my oasis and when I look out my windows all I see are trees, trees and more trees.
  1. Making a home-cooked meal. You could probably guess this would be my final point based on the previous four, but nothing nourishes my soul quite like cooking a wonderful meal for my family and sitting down at the table to enjoy it together. Togetherness is essential to my joyousness! What I mean by that is, being with friends and family is my soul-food and cooking for them multiples that soul nourishing feeling!

Self-care doesn’t have to be complicated, expensive or time-consuming. Figure out what makes you feel at ease and then make sure you schedule time for it every week. Ideally, you want to make self-care part of your daily routine, but if it doesn’t happen every day, don’t beat yourself up. Just remember to do something nice just for you the very next opportunity you have.
