For International Women’s Month, we chatted with four women who are leading the way in the health and wellness space—women who embody the word ‘strong’ and inspire us to put our best foot forward each and every day.
Meet Joy McCarthy, the powerhouse founder of Joyous Health, an award-winning Certified Holistic Nutritionist and best-selling author of The Joyous Cookbook, Joyous Detox and Joyous Health.
We chatted with Joy to find out how she keeps herself strong, how she instills these characteristics in her daughter Vienna, one mistake she learned from, and who inspires her.
How did you come to start Joyous Health?
I started Joyous Health in 2009 because I was deeply passionate about sharing my love for natural health and delicious, whole-foods based recipes with the world. I had suffered from my own health issues which I was able to resolve using complementary medicine (aka natural health) and it changed my life. This is what originally inspired me to go back to school and study nutrition as it was my second career after Marketing/Advertising.
What’s your definition of a strong woman?
A strong woman is one who can be vulnerable, yet confident and face adversity with optimism and an open heart.
How do you instill these characteristics in your daughter?
The biggest and most important thing I can do as a mom is to love myself. Loving me allows me to be more loving to others which means I can love Vienna unconditionally (which I do wholeheartedly). I believe that she knows she is loved and that in turn, will help her to love herself and be strong in her individuality, feel confident and face adversity with optimism.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to start her own business?
Be focused. All successful entrepreneurs have razor-sharp focus and are determined to reach their goals. It’s easy to get caught up in social media and all the distractions we have but when you are focused, you can drown out the noise, make your dreams a reality and make S&^% happen. I also recommend being consistent. Consistent with your branding, messaging, work ethic, social media presence, content marketing …. I could go on and on but being consistent is absolutely essential to growing the business of your dreams. And finally, remember that it’s a marathon not a sprint. The large majority of entrepreneurs were NOT an overnight success. It takes years and sometimes decades to get there.
Tell us about a time you made a mistake in your career and what you learned from it?
Early in my career, I treated Joyous Health as a hobby, a passion project, not like a business. This lead to me only doing things within the business that I really loved like writing, creating and speaking. But there is so much more to running a business… like operations, marketing, accounting and more. Once I figured out that I needed to wear 10 different hats and give equal attention to all the aspects of my business, Joyous Health grew.
What do you do each day to keep yourself strong?
I nourish my body well and I incorporate movement into my day. However, I’ve started something new in 2020 that has been life-changing for me and I don’t take that phrase lightly. I’ve started meditating 20-30 minutes per day. It has created space in my mind that I’ve been craving. It’s helping me to be aware of my monkey brain and reframe negative thought patterns. I also think it’s helping me feel calmer and more relaxed.
Who inspires you?
My parents. They are incredibly positive, nurturing and love unconditionally. My hubby Walker also inspires me, a lot. He is such a calm and grounding human. I aspire to be more like that 🙂 And one more… I love Gwyneth Paltrow. I love that despite what other critics might say about her, she believes in her mission to create awareness for all the ways we can take good care of our bodies. And she loves exploring all the ways we can do that.
Do you have a favourite quote or mantra?
Oh my gosh, I have so many! I’m the mantra/quote queen!! The one I have beside my desk is “The greatest power you possess in life is your understanding that life gives you a fresh start at any moment you choose to start fresh.”
